We use fruit flies (Drosophila) to identify general principals about how cells move, which is particularly important for understanding animal development and human disease. Fly cells and fly genes have a lot in common with cells and genes in other organisms, and flies are relatively easy to study. Specifically, we want to figure out what genes and physical features of tissues control cell migration in flies, and this information can then be applied to other contexts.
